Director's Welcome
Welcome to Communities In Schools of the Nation's Capital - or as we sometimes refer to it - CISNCAP.
I am humbled to be part of a national network of CIS organizations delivering needed resources to nearly one million students in 3,250 schools! In fact, CIS is the fifth largest youth-serving organization and the leading dropout prevention organization. That is probably why CIS has twice been voted by Worth Magazine as "one of the 100 top charities most likely to save the country."
At CISNCAP we focus on saving the underserved children of Washington, D.C.'s Wards 7 and 8. Did you know the D.C. dropout rate exceeds 50%? Fortunately, the CIS model of "wrap-around" services is affordable, sustainable, and has worked effectively for thirty years.
Every day, CISNCAP connects needed community resources with underserved schools in Washington, D.C., to help students successfully learn, remain in school, and prepare for life. Why? Because we understand that what happens in the classroom is influenced by conditions outside the classroom. Academic failure cannot be treated in isolation.
Students often have nowhere to turn for solutions to problems like hunger, poor health, and homelessness. Pervasive social issues like teen pregnancy, substance abuse, and youth violence become obstacles to success and contribute to the dropout epidemic. CISNCAP helps families and schools connect with services and programs so children can stay in school and prepare for life.
• We work directly with the most disenfranchised student populations in Washington's Wards 7 and 8 to identify problems and remove barriers.
• We partner with programs and service providers to meet student needs and broker an agreement between the schools and the providers.
• We bring services directly into the schools and to the students.
• We monitor the relationships between the service providers and the school.
• We track the outcomes of these interventions.
The integrated student support services provided through CISNCAP improve behavior, increase attendance, and strengthen academic performance.
CISNCAP works in partnership-not in competition-with other youth-serving organizations and agencies to meet the social, physical, and emotional needs of underserved students. Our goal is to keep children in school and “on track” toward promotion and high school graduation. Our partners include the DC Public Schools (DCPS), Office of the State Superintendent of Education, DCPS Office of Out-of-School Time, Double the Numbers Initiative, and the Department of Human Services. CISNCAP also links students to college access providers, local colleges and universities, and many other programs and service providers.
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the children in Washington, D.C. and look forward to expanding our services throughout the city. I hope you will join me as we work together with families, schools, and the community to help our children be successful in school and life.
